Softphone
A softphone is PC-based digital telephony software. It allows the users to make calls with their computers without the need for a desktop telephone unit. It offers the same features as a tradional analog phone thus allowing conversion to an IP based communications system without the additional expense of purchasing new phone hardware. Users may speak directly into the PC microphone or may purchase optional headsets for communication. Softphones also have the advantage over desktop phones in that they are usable as long as the PC has IP connectivity allowing the user to phone in from remote locations.
